Depending on whom you ask, you will hear a range of advice on the best way to learn the game of golf. However, there are some overall tips and techniques that can help the brand new golfer learn to enjoy this game.
One of the first things to know is good posture. When going to swing, flex your knees slightly, you do not want your knees too straight or to be standing without a bend to your hip. However, nor do you want your knees bent too much and to be very bent over at the hips with your shoulders slouching. Place two index fingers on your hipbones, and tilt over your belt buckle or tilt over your waistline. Remember not to let your shoulders slouch; ideally they should be kept back.
Contingency when hitting the golf ball is very essential. It helps to remember, that having a solid hit is often more essential than being able to hit the ball far. When you learn to be steady with your swing, you will over time gain length as well as strength. There are three fundamentals that are necessary for building a sound golf swing, grip stance and posture.
When you are ready to purchase a set of clubs, you should bear in mind a few details. Beginners to the game of golf often make the mistake of wanting to start out with a brand new set of expensive golf clubs. When you are first starting to golf, you will not know yet which set of clubs will be the best fit for you. Golf clubs come in an assortment to accommodate the different golfing types and abilities; your purchase should be made when you know what category you fit in.
If you are determined to purchase a set of clubs, you should start out with a half set. This usually consists of five irons and maybe two woods as well as a putter. Typically your irons will be the odd numbers 3,5,7,9 and a wedge. This will be plenty to get you started out on your golf game.
If you are content to wait on purchasing golf clubs, you still have other options. Most driving ranges have clubs that you can rent. This allows you to try out different ones. Another alternative is to borrow clubs from someone you know who already plays golf. To practice with at first, the nine iron or a wedge are the clubs best suited for you. They provide you with the feeling of hitting the ball in the air and are typically straightforward to use.
Golf is actually a challenging sport, especially for a beginner. Even though you will be tempted, when starting out, avoid going to a golf course. Instead, start yourself off at the driving range. You should take no less than four or five lessons, learning the basics before you move on. When you have that covered, move on to a nine-hole course and in due time, you will find yourself ready for eighteen holes.
Everyone you meet who has been playing for a while will have advice for you on how to best improve your game. Although it never hurts to listen, keep in mind, they have all adapted their golf game to suit the way that they play. If you have questions, or want to learn techniques, it is always best to seek out the help of golf professionals.
Taking lessons from a pro can be expensive, but if you are anxious to learn, you may find it to be a wise investment. Golf clubs and driving ranges typically have pro’s that you can hire for your lessons.
To go along with your professional lessons, or to help you on your own, you may find other aids useful. You can watch some instructional golf videos, read books, or even listen to CDs. You may find viewing golf on television or live helpful as well.
Once you have the basics down, the only thing left to do is practice. Your game will never improve if you do not work on it often. It is important that you get out on the course as often as you can to work on what you have learned. As long as you are doing this, and having fun, your game will just keep getting better.
